John 21:7 -- Why did Peter throw himself into the water..excited to see Jesus?

Evidence from Bible's Number Patterns Clarifies our Interpretation

“… So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.….” John 21:7

In the 21st chapter of the book of John in the New Testament we find an account of how Jesus secretly manifested himself to his disciples on a beach after his resurrection. John 21 says that all night Peter and the disciples were out fishing in a boat, but they did not catch any fish. As the sun came up, an unknown man (Jesus) stood on the shore commenting that they had caught no fish. This man then instructed them to put the net down on the right side of the boat and as a result they caught so many fish they could not lift the net into the boat.

After this obvious miracle occurred, the disciple in the boat with Peter exclaimed "It is the Lord" recognizing this man on the beach as the risen Jesus. Upon hearing this, Peter immediately got up and dressed himself (because he was naked) and "threw" himself into the ocean.

Every explanation of this account I can find says Peter was so excited to go see the Lord that he didn't wait for the boat to be taken to shore. Instead, he threw himself in the water to quickly swim to see Jesus. This explanation never made good sense to me and it bothered me that the text said Peter "threw" himself in the water. For many years I felt it was taking a leap of interpretation to read into the text why Peter threw himself in the water. My experience was (when discussing scripture with others) when I assumed too much about what the text said,  I often found myself in the uncomfortable position of trying to explain how I could know what the text did not specifically spell out.

One day, when encountering this text again in one of my personal Bible study times I saw it in a different light. The previous evening I had been in a study of Genesis chapter 3 where Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit. When God came by in the garden, they knew their guilt of sin and covered themselves (dressed) and hid from God due to their shame. When studying John 21 the next day I realized this account of Peter dressing himself and then throwing himself in the water was very much like Adam in Eve in the Garden.

As I studied this text more I realized Peter had just previously denied Jesus three times before his crucifixion and now Jesus had shown up right before him. It seems that out of his guilt and shame Peter covered his nakedness and tried to hide so Jesus would not see him.

I was very excited to see this aspect of the text and later tried to share it with others. Everyone I explained the possibility to thought it was interesting but could not possibly be a valid explanation. They would quickly change the subject at the unpleasant thought of discussing such crazy thoughts about this passage.

Wanting to help prove to myself that my new interpretation was either true or not, I thought that I might look at the pattern of themes in the Bible's 21:7 verses and see if they would help clarify what the verse at John 21:7 was really saying. I was astonished to find very clearly that the preponderance of 21:7 verses spoke of sin, not excitement or good. Even though I still don't find anyone who quite accepts my explanation today, I am basically confident that Peter was hiding from his shame and not eager to see Jesus.

This is one of my best examples of how the patterns reflected in Biblical numbering can help guide our interpretation of scripture. It shows another way the Bible helps interpret itself. Following is an explanation of how the patterns of like referenced verses can help us discern scripture better.

Like-referenced Verses

There are 4,532 different combinations of chapter- and verse-number references, which I refer to as “like-referenced-verse sets.” These are verses in different books that have the same chapter and verse number, such as the 28:14 verse set, in which there are, coincidentally, fourteen different verses. Due to the predictability of numbers with their themes, we can examine sets of like-referenced verses to get an understanding of the common theme that runs through them. This is not to imply that every verse in the set has the same theme, but every verse in the set does have themes relating somehow to the verse reference number, and by examining all of those in the set we can observe themes running through them. One of the most helpful examples of where these like-referenced verse sets have guided me is in examining John 21:7, where Peter throws himself into the water when he sees Jesus on the shore: “… So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.….”

Every commentary I find seems to believe Peter was in such a hurry to see Jesus that he jumped into the water to swim to the Lord. But that’s not what the verse says. It says he threw himself into the water. When other people did not understand how I questioned the common interpretation I decided to look at like-referenced verses to see if there were clues to helping understand it. I was amazed as I began to see the strong evidence for the theme of 21:7 verses relating to the shame of sin.

Examples of Bible's 21:7 verses showing they follow a pattern of sinfulness

Num 21:7 So the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD…
Job 21:7 "Why do the wicked still live, Continue on, also become very powerful?
1Chr 21:7 God was displeased with this thing, so He struck Israel.
Prov 21:7 The violence of the wicked will drag them away, Because they refuse to act with justice.
Deu 21:7 and they shall answer and say, 'Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.
Lev 21:7 'They shall not take a woman who is profaned by harlotry, nor shall they take a woman divorced from her husband…
2Kin 21:7 Then he set the carved image of Asherah that he had made in the house (temple).
Eze 21:7 "..'Why do you groan?' you shall say, 'Because of the news that is coming; and every heart will melt, all hands will be feeble"

And in John 21:7 notice how the sin theme surfaces in the text...
when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment (fig leaf) on and threw himself into the sea (tried to hide from the Lord)" (John 21:7 ).
The verses in this 21:7 set helped me confirm that Peter didn’t throw himself into the water because he was eager to see Jesus, but because he had just denied Jesus three times, and upon seeing Him, much like Adam and Eve in the garden, he put on a fig leaf (his outer garmet) “threw himself” into the water to hide from the Lord. This gives amazing meaning we can relate to regarding Peter’s action as we all can understand such shame and knowing Peter was afraid to see Jesus gives new understanding to the significance of the following passages where Jesus restores him—John 21:15 “...Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me...”.

Analyzing verse sets does not interpret verses for you, but it gives valuable insight to better understand the messages in the Bible. When you need more information to help understand scripture, examine like referenced verses for themes that will guide you.

What are The Bible's Redemption Pattern and Numeric Map about?

On Amazon -- The Redemption Pattern and Numeric Map

Description

Most everyone has heard random comments from sermons about the symbolism behind numbers in the Bible, but the explanations given are so brief that they have little practical use in our own personal Bible study. As a result, Christians read the Bible without being able to put one of the best tools of interpretation to use in their study. This book explains not only the symbolism of Biblical numbers but more importantly describes the progressive meaning behind each number and how they relate to what the author refers to as the Bible's Redemption Pattern. Numbers not only have a consistent symbolism everywhere they are used in scripture, but each number helps describe the ten basic steps of a Christian's path of walking with God in their lives.

Similarly to "The Four Spiritual Laws" of Campus Crusade, the Redemption Pattern explains in detail the ten steps of; One-Knowing God; Two-The Appointed Redeemer who came for us; Three-God's Holiness and Righteousness; Four-Our trials and journey through the wilderness life; Five-What God demands of us and resulting blessings and consequences; Six-Our decision to cross over and turn from sin in our life; Seven-God as the Good Shepherd who uses the rod and the staff to teach us his ways to lead us to being complete;; Eight-How we become faithful believers by finally being convinced to give up our own ways to sincerely try to let God lead our lives; Nine-Our responsibility to anxiously anticipate Jesus return and faithfully serve while we await this event; and Ten-The number of final things including God's final disposition at the end of the age.

This book explains the symbolism of numbers; how to understand the Redemption Pattern steps; and most importantly, how we find this Redemption Pattern used throughout the Bible thus it being a constant reminder in scripture of God's plan for our lives. This pattern can be seen repeatedly in virtually every list of the Bible including; the Lord's Prayer; The names of ten generations from Adam to Noah; the Beatitudes; The Plagues of the Bible; feast days and more.

There's many other gems of knowledge throughout the book; explaining the numbers 72, 144, 153, 666, 777, & 1260; how 911 can be seen in scripture; the special numerical significance of John chapter 3; how numbers combine to make meaning and much more.

From the Author

Once you see all the examples of how numbers are used in whatever Bible you use today, you will quickly begin to make use of them in your everyday Bible study. These principals apply to both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible so this means they also will be observed and equally useful in the study of the Torah and other religious documents.

About the Author

Norm Patriquin is an everyday layman believer who over a ten year period accidentally stumbled over the Redemption Pattern and what he calls the Numeric Map of the Bible. He works today to pass on this knowledge to others showing how Biblical numbers are not a complex code or mathematical puzzle, but instead can be quickly comprehended as a very simple guide to helping us understand God's plan for our lives.

The exact middle of the Torah points to the Holy Spirit - Urim and Thummim?

I just noticed this amazing feature of the Torah this evening - December 27, 2012 and still want to do more research on this...but it seems worth sharing with those interested in such things.

The middle two verses of the Torah

Lev 8:8 He then placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim.
Lev 8:9 He also placed the turban on his head, and on the turban, at its front, he placed the golden plate, the holy crown, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

The Torah is the five books of Moses or the Old Testament of the King James and similar Bibles. The books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy contain 5852 total verses so dividing that in half tells us that Leviticus 8:8-9 (2926th and 2927th verses of the King James Bible) are the exact center verses of the Torah books.

I've said before, I don't consider myself a Bible scholar, so what I write about are just simply my observances and opinions of patterns I study in the Bible so each person should confirm what I write here for themselves (Acts 17:11).  As I remember, Bible scholars debate as to weather Leviticus 8:8 references to the Urim and Thummin are references to God's Holy Spirit -- For the evidences I note below, I do believe they do. Assuming this is true, it is absolutely amazing that the exact two middle verses of the Torah point to what i think of as Jesus in our midst - The Spirit of God.

This evidence of the major numerical, DNA like, numbering of the Torah is also evidence for the possibility that the entire Bible is divinely numbered. This is similar to the apparently divinely appointed position of Psalm 117 which is the exact middle chapter of the Bible (595th of 1189 chapters). It has only two verses which also point to "The LORD" as the center of the KJV scriptures. I believe the reference of "The LORD" is a reference to Jesus Christ. It is an extremely unlikely coincidence this shortest and only two verse chapter of the Bible just happens to find itself as the center chapter and have text that seems to tells us the entire Bible (1st and 2nd half) are about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Following are the only two verses in Psalm 117.
Psa 117:1 Praise the LORD, all nations; Laud Him, all peoples!
Psa 117:2 For His lovingkindness is great toward us, And the truth of the LORD is everlasting. Praise the LORD!

The middle of the Torah points to God's Holy Spirit and the middle chapter of the KJV points to the LORD Jesus -- this is incredible confirmation the Bible is the precise, preserved, Word of God. For added support these are not coincidence, check out the exact middle verses of the KJV which are Psalm 103:1-2 which both proclaim "Bless the LORD, O my soul".  God's Word is simply amazing beyond comprehension. Consider its perfection is beyond any possible human design and that the mathematically confirm-able DNA like numbering is strong evidence of the Bible's divine author being God himself.

Praise God!

Numerical Evidence for the Spiritual Nature of the Bible's 8:8 Verses

Following are a selection of the Bible's verses that have a chapter and verse reference of 8:8. Consider how they in one form or another seem to point to the spiritual nature of the Holy Spirit:
Est 8:8 "Now you write to the Jews as you see fit, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's signet ring; for a decree which is written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's signet ring may not be revoked."

Gen 8:8 Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land;

Rom 8:8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Prov 8:8 "All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverted in them.

Neh 8:8 They read from the book, from the law of God, translating to give the sense so that they understood the reading.

Zech 8:8 and I will bring them back and they will live in the midst of Jerusalem; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.'

Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, He says, "BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD, WHEN I WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH;

Matt 8:8 But the centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

14 of all 22 of the Bible's 18:18 verses incredibly point to sin and relate to 666 - Number of the Beast

One of the best ways to begin to understand God’s number/theme associations is to look at verses where the number you are researching is found multiple times associated with the text (both in the text and in verse numbering). I believe that all the numbers associated with a verse are somehow a clue to its overall interpretation, so when you find multiple like numbers associated with a single verse, the verse text will more obviously give clues to themes for that number. That is, a verse with both chapter and verse number 18 (18:18) will more likely reflect the theme related to #18  in the text than a verse with only chapter or verse of 18 (I.E. 7:18).  For this reason, one of my favorite ways to research the theme association with numbers is to look at verses with the same chapter and verse number. In this blog post I’ll use this method to help demonstrate that the number eighteen is very often found associated with things or events about “sin”.

To be fair, I already have deeply studied this  #18 theme association, so use the examples I show here to understand the concept of learning about number themes -- don’t assume it is my only basis for associating #18 with sin. For example, here’s my best example of a #18 related sin verse – it is found in Revelation 13:18…
Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.

Using number 666 to see the theme for related #18
The number most often associated with great sin in the Bible is the number of the beast which is “666”.  No matter if you think of this number as 666 or 6-6-6 (which some are particular about), how you look at it seems to have no impact to its associated numeric theme. Wherever you find three sixes in the Bible, you will most often find them associated with sin (and sometimes its opposite for every number has both positive and negative associations). #666 is related to #18…

So how am I associating #18 with the number 666? There are hundreds of evidences in Bible numbers, but my favorite to show is this 18th verse of Revelation 13. Not only is the verse number 18 but this also happens to be the Bible’s 1180th chapter which also associates another number eighteen with every verse of the chapter

many different numbers beyond those we are familiar with are associated with every Bible verse so understanding number/verse theme relationships can be complex, but fortunately, the patterns are pretty obvious to understand once you learn how they work.

So this well-known verse at Revelation 13:18 is related to the number of the beast and the number 18 associated with it suggests it might also be associated with number 18?

Once you begin to see the patterns in Biblical numbers, look for relationships of related numbers because closely related numbers have similar themes. In Revelation 13:18 the number 666 can also be seen as 6+6+6 which adds to 18 so this observed relationship could be a clue that their theme relationships are also similar. This related number pattern is so prevalent in scripture that I always examine numbers associated with verses to see how their themes compare. Of course number relationships are just a clue, but these sorts of clues are the kind you want to follow when determining number themes.  Let’s look at another number related to both #18 and sin.

One of the best number examples connecting #18 to sin is #36. Thirty-six is related to #18 in that it can be a product of 2x18 or 6x6 (powers or factors of numbers have related themes).  There are hundreds of Biblical examples of sin that are found with #36. Some chapter 36 examples related to sin are; Ezekiel chapter 36 – v 31 Israel’s sin…..you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves; Jeremiah chapter 36—v3 "Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the calamity which I plan to bring on them, in order that every man will turn from his evil way;  and Psalm 36 - v1 Transgression speaks to the ungodly within his heart; There is no fear of God before his eyes".   There are only nine #36 chapters in the Bible and you will find they all in one form or another relate to sin.

Note that number 36 can also be seen as three sixes -- 6+6+6  (Other examples are 37 being related to 777 and 38 related to 888). I know these at first seem to be contrived number to number relationships, but Bible patterns demonstrate them over and over again.

There’s a lot to absorb in this article, so don’t worry about trusting all these assumptions now, you can verify them for yourself at a later time.

Some of the best clues to observing number 36 is often found related to sin can be seen in Bible verses where the chapter and verse numbers are somehow associated with the numbers three and six. Not only chapter or verse 36 but also to be considered are verses whose chapter and verse are “3:6”. I know this continues to sound more impossible with every paragraph – It may help to remember, I opened this article saying that all the numbers related to a verse help you understand the theme in the text -- so it’s not necessarily how numbers appear as read, but that they exist related to the text (this is a very important consideration when studying Biblical numbers as some Bible translations take the liberty of translating measures such as cubits to feet and yards which corrupts what specific numbers are truly found in the original text).
#36 and original sin in the Bible…Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

Genesis 3:6 is the most compelling verse related to sin. It is the verse of original sin that occurred when Eve (and Adam) ate the forbidden fruit. This 3:6 referenced verse helps show the relationship of number 36 (666) to the theme of sin…

…some Bible translations take the liberty of translating measures such as cubits to feet and yards which corrupts what specific numbers are truly found in the original text

Examining the text of 18:18 referenced verses to see their association to sin…
So above, I have associated #18 with the numbers 666 and 36. The remainder of this article shows a selection of 14 of the Bible’s 22 verses that have both chapter and verse number of 18 (18:18). If you desire to view other examples, they are found in the books (Gen, Deu, Exo, Lev, Num, Josh, Judg, 1Sam, 2Sam, 1Kin, 2Kin, 2Chr, Job, Psa, Prov, Jer, Eze, Matt, Luke, John, Act, Rev.).

Before beginning to look over the examples -  note that if this is the first time you have seen examples of similar themes in like referenced verses, your first reaction will likely be that the relationship of these verses to “sin” is probably just coincidence. Be discerning, but also use these examples as evidence for a theory instead of them being presented as proof of the Bible’s supernatural numbering. It took me years of observing the preponderance of these patterns before I finally had to conclude they must be real. The only way for anyone to know the truth for themselves is to open your mind to this impossible thing God might have done and examine other evidences of like referenced verses for yourself. The evidence is not difficult to observe for a sincere seeker and might forever change how one thinks of God and Jesus Christ.

Examine these 18:18 verses and observe their "sin" theme...
1Kin 18:18 He said, "…you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and you have followed the Baals.

Judg 18:18 When these went into Micah's house and took the graven image, the ephod and household idols and the molten image

Rev 18:18 …were crying out as they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, 'What city is like the great city?'

Eze 18:18 "As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was not good among his people, behold, he will die for his iniquity.

John 18:18 (Peter turned away from Jesus, standing with the officers) Now the slaves and the officers were standing having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.

2Sam 18:18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself a pillar which is in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to preserve my name." So he named the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's Monument to this day.

Lev 18:18  (great sin) 'You shall not marry a woman in addition to her sister as a rival while she is alive, to uncover her nakedness.

Exo 18:18 "You will surely wear out, both yourself and these people who are with you, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.

Job 18:18 "He is driven from light into darkness, And chased from the inhabited world.

Psa 18:18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my stay.

Prov 18:18 The cast lot puts an end to strife And decides between the mighty ones.

Jer 18:18 Then they said, "Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the law is not going to be lost to the priest…Come on and let us strike at him with our tongue, and let us give no heed to any of his words."

Matt 18:18 "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven…

Luke 18:18 (he thought he had no sin) A ruler questioned Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

As for the examples not shown here, remember at the beginning of this article I explained the text of each verse is associated with all the numbers related with the verse, so even though I believe the theme for #18 is in every 18:18 verse, the theme may be a bit more difficult to observe in some verses. Don’t expect to comprehend every example.

Only God truly knows his number/theme relationships so you can’t take what I write here as anymore than ideas you can ponder for yourself. Now that you have seen examples of themes in like referenced verses there are thousands of evidences you can use to check this idea out for yourself. Just pick any verse you like and go look at its counterparts. Happy hunting!

The Most Compelling of All Evidences that God Numbered the Bible... 31 Topic Transition Verses

The KJV and like Bibles have 31,102 verses and every 1000th verse is a God established section transition marker

God said with him "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE", but could he have arranged the Bible precisely into 31 sections - each exactly 1000 verses in length? The evidence for this supernatural perfection of Biblical writing is near impossible to ignore. Of course, there's no way for the average person to be able to count off and find every 1000th verse in scripture, but if you could you would find the below list of verses, each one of them being at a very definite transition point in the Bible's text. In every case, a key event or statement is found that ends one section of scripture and begins another. For example, in the 4000th Bible verse at Numbers 10:11 the Pillar of Cloud first moves to begin Israel's wandering; in the 5000th verse Moses asks to enter the promised land and is denied - ending this episode of Israel's history; and in the 9000th verse Solomon's Temple is completed and at this exact place, God enters it in a cloud completing another episode in Biblical history. All the other of the 31 transition verses have an equally compelling message to declare. I believe future published copies of the Torah and the Bible will specifically note these 1000 verse sections so everyone may study them.

BUT SUCH SUPERNATURAL CONSTRUCTION IS IMPOSSIBLE ACCORDING TO WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT HOW THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE CAME TOGETHER... Yes, but...
Mrk 10:27 Looking at them, Jesus *said, "With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."
Why is this so compelling?
What makes these one thousand verse sections so compelling is that the transition verses that mark them are so clearly visible and that their exact 1000 verse locations could not be contrived.  It's very difficult for people to accept other evidences of numbering perfection I have written about because the numbering/text patterns might possibly be contrived out of my imagination. But these 1000th verse section verses could not have been contrived by me. One might disagree that they are transition points, but these are a very definate set of repeatable evidences that together as a whole tell a story that I believe says only a supernatural God could have created the KJV Bible as we know it today.

The List of all the Bible's 1000th verses
Below I’ve provided a reference for these 31 transition verses. Even if you are not so sure of the compelling nature of this perfect pattern, this list is still a valuable tool in noticing some major breakpoints in the events of scripture.
